The Songgwang-sa precept school of Jogye monstic teaching center was opened at the stupa hall with Great Monk Bumil Bosung(present Son Master) attended in April 1(February 15: lunar calendar), 2532 B.E.(A.D. 1988), Buddha's Nirvana Memorial Day. The stupa hall is a hermitage nearest to the main hall located 1 km northwest from the main hall and is a tranquil and cosy place.

As he said in the opening prospectus of the precept school, “Nowadays the saint passed away long time ago, the demon is strengthened, Dharma is weakened, the misconduct of monks are very popular, the prestige of the Buddhism organization is damaged very often, and Buddha's light is almost covered up with clouds,” the precept school of Songgwang-sa is to be opened to reestablish the image of contemporary Busshism and to get back to the way that Buddhism should be.

The number of school days of the Songwangsa precept school is two years, the required courses are all the vinaya pitakas such as Sramanera Rules and Decorum, Bhikku Precept Manual, and Beommanggyeong, and the other courses are seminars. Qualifications for admission to the precept school are Bhikku having graduated from a Buddhist lecture school and having a capability of practice and interpretation. After the appropriate qualifying examination for admission, a room is assigned and the vinaya is taught. Formal introduction is made annually in the free date of the winter retreat season. Especially, alumni of the precept school can come back to the school and study the precept further.
